Funding Opportunities
1. Wildspace! Funding
Cambridge City Council can provide funding through English Nature’s
Wildspace! Grant, for capital projects on Local Nature Reserves. £9000
is available in 2004/2005 and £5000 in 2005/2006 subject to approval
by the LNR Steering Group.

2. Sustainable City Funding
Who can apply?
The Sustainable City Project Grants are available to locally based organisations/
individuals undertaking practical projects which:
1. Support one or more of the priority areas identified by the Environment
Plan
2. Involve and/or bring benefits to the residents of Cambridge.
Please note that we are not able to support individuals/organisations
connected with any political party or involved in party politics, or that
operate for private gain.
How are applications assessed?
Applications are assessed by City Councillors, who refer to a range
of criteria, including:
- The extent to which the project supports the objectives specified
by the Environment Plan
- The evidence of need for the project
- Other sources of funding available to the project
- Whether the aims of the project are clear, and achievable within the
specified timescales and budget
- Whether the project represent “value for money” (comparing
the grant requested against the benefits specified).

3. Heritage Lottery Fund
The Local Heritage Initiative can fund between £3,000 and £25,000
to local community groups for local environmental heritage projects. Also
available is Your Heritage, which can fund between £5,000 and £50,000
for environmental heritage projects. HLFs’ Public Parks Initiative
could also apply to Local Nature Reserves (read Section A, question 2
on page 12 of the application booklet) and offers grants upwards of £50,000.
The final scheme that may be of interest to you is Young Roots, which
offers between £5,000 and £25,000 towards schemes involving
young people.

4. Awards for All
Awards for All operates from 9 regional offices and offers funding to
small groups of between £500 and £10,000 for a broad range
of environmental initiatives.

5. BTCV People’s Places
The People’s Places scheme, supported by the New Opportunities
Fund, awards grants to community groups (especially in disadvantaged areas)
of between £3,000 and £10,000 to develop new, or improve existing,
green spaces, whether in urban or rural areas.

6. Living Spaces
Living Spaces was launched on 29 May 2003 and will offer £30million
over three years. It is run by Groundwork in partnership with a number
of other organisations including the Wildlife Trusts. Grants of £1,000
to 100,000 are available to community neighbourhood groups and can contribute
to the creation of nature areas amongst many other local green-space improvements.

7. Barclays SiteSavers
Awards of up to £5000 for community environmental projects.

8. Biffaward Small Grants Scheme
Landfill tax credit scheme operated by Biffa Waste Services and administered
by RSNC. Grants of between £250-£5000 available to not-for-profit
community-led organisations within 10 miles of a Biffa operation.
Projects must fall into one of these categories: Wildlife and habitat
conservation; Informal education and lifelong learning; sport, culture,
recreation.

9. BT Countryside for All
Grants of £250-£1,500 to improve access in the countryside
for disabled people.
10. The Co-op Foundation
Grants of £200-£30,000 to community groups.

11. Ethnic Minorities Award Scheme for Environmental Projects
Grants of up to £500 where there is significant involvement of
ethnic minority communities.

12. Hanson Environment Fund
Community Grants Scheme
£250-£4000 grants offered via the landfill tax credit scheme
for community amenities, wildlife and habitat conservation and recycling
projects.

13. The England Rural Development Programme
Aims to help farmers and foresters to respond better to consumer requirements
and become more competitive, diverse, flexible and environmentally responsible.
It also provides help to rural businesses and communities, which need
to adapt and develop. There are a range of schemes available.

i.e. schemes to conserve and improve the environment (also known as agri-environment
schemes);
