Barnwell East was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1992 following demands for the site to be developed for football pitches and housing. Since then the site has been managed in partnership with the City Greenways Project and Cambridge City Council to enhance the diversity of the grassland.

A circular path around the reserve provides an excellent walk at any time of year, highlights being the Bee Orchid in early summer and the beauty of the changing colours in autumn.
